How Chiang Mai Has Changed (2024 With Prices) | Thailand Travel Vlog
Chiang Mai is AMAZING. It's our fav city in Thailand and we used to live in Chiang Mai, so in this vlog it's a walk down Nimmanhaemin memory lane, food, hotels, things to do and the night market... Liked our accom? Take a look at pricing here: https://geni.us/fLOg72y — ⬇ See below for Thailand recommendations⬇
It's been far too many years between our last Thailand trip and revisiting Chiang Mai, but man it feels so good to be exploring the Nimmanhaemin area and some of old town at the night markets again - it's good to be home(ish).
In 2016 we got the crazy idea to sell everything we own and book a one way ticket to Thailand, staying in Chiang Mai as digital nomads working on a few different businesses, with no idea what would happen or where it would take us. It turned out to be the ...

There's so many epic things to do in Chiang Mai, but we really wanted to revisit some of our old favs, explore the night markets again and go back to our favourite cafe and food spot! We also found an amazing new hotel to check out as well, with so much going on this is likely our longest Thailand video in this not so little travel series.
Special thanks to Sabai Sabai Chiang Mai for hosting us to help share with you an epic walk down memory lane in our old hood! Check them out here: https://www.mosaic-collection.com/sabai-sabai-chiangmai

Safety, interest-based groups & communities, housing options in the city and the countryside, just some of the many things people consider before moving to a new location long term.
So today, I'll cover these points by sharing from experience after living in Chiang Mai Thailand since 2018. I'll also throw in some practical tips that should come in handy once you're here.
Chiang Mai City Facts
Chiang Mai city is the largest city in Northern Thailand and the fifth largest in the country in terms of population. But unlike many big cities, there are no tall skyscrapers here or massive buildings. Instead, it's more like a large, traditional village that's almost sprawling.
Safety:
Generally, I feel safe here in Chiang mai. The locals are friendly but as with any place you go, be sure to keep your wits and street smarts with you to avoid any issues during your stay. Keep an eye on your valuables, don't leave your keys in your scooter or motorcycles, you get the point.
Interest-Based Groups and Communities
In Chiang Mai, there are many groups and communities for just about anything - meditation, yoga, hiking, cycling, moms, food lovers, night lifers, and so on. I would recommend joining some FB groups relevant to your interests to learn more about events and activities you may like.
Living in Chiang Mai
If you like to be in the countryside with a more rural feel, there's Doi saket, Mae Rim, saraphi, and San kamphaeng. Traffic is lighter, you'll see more ricefields, it is quieter, and there are quaint cafes and restaurants with scenic views
although after the rice harvest season it can get pretty smoky in these areas when farmers burn the fields to prepare it for the next planting season.

In the past 8 months, we have been living a nomadic life and moving from one place to another. Traveling is fun and exciting but I was beginning to miss having a homebase.
There were also some life changes that led to the constant moving around. Our lease ended in March, we had to leave Thailand to get a new visa, and I spent a few months in the Philippines to visit my son who is studying in a university.
Now that things are more stable, my partner and I began to look for our new home. We are both ready to settle down in one place for a while and consider Chiang Mai as our home base.
Let me give you a little tour of our new Chiang Mai home.
We are renting a 2 bedroom house in Doi Saket district, about 20 kms away from the city center. We like that it is in a quiet neighborhood and has a more rural feel to it. The yard is decent sized, and there are already some trees and plants on it. I am particularly excited about the small raised bed where we can plant vegetables and herbs.
My favorite part of the house is the kitchen. Since we have been traveling a lot, I never had a proper kitchen, and I missed cooking and preserving foods.
While our new kitchen is small, it is perfect for now. The countertop will be a spot for my potted herbs and for making delicious home cooked meals. It is still bare and we are getting a small oven for making breads and pastries and also a pot for cooking beans and soups.
There's plenty of storage where I can place some homemade preserves, pickles, and jams.
The living room is cozy, and there's a lovely little reading nook. I also have a little desk where I can do my work.
We are grateful to have found this home. It costs 13000 thb to rent, and it is fairly reasonable.
Just a kilometer away from our house is a saltwater pool, a small gym and a playground. There are also rice fields nearby.
A little further away, perhaps a 15-minute motorcycle ride, is a park where there are hiking trails and a reservoir.
Thank you for joining me today. In my future videos, I'll share with you more progress with our home and some projects and crafts I do to minimize our expenses, live simply and sustainably… which has always been the main focus of my channel.

If you're someone like me who likes to live in a place that's affordable, with quick and easy access to nature, cheap and nutritious food and just a gentle and loving vibe, I think you will love Chiang Mai. As an expat who has lived here for three and a half years, I feel inspired to share my personal experience on what it's like to live here.
Maybe you're thinking about visiting Chiang Mai one day as a tourist, or living here long term. So I hope this video will be helpful for you. I will cover many topics such as rent, electric, internet, food, and one small thing that might be a drawback for you. But for some people, it might be tolerable.
It was October 2018. My partner and I were on a short trip in India. And we were on their way to Bali to start looking for a house. And we watched this video on Chiang Mai and this person was talking about how cheap it is. And you really get a good deal for your money. Rent is affordable. And it's vegetarian friendly and digital nomad friendly. And we were curious what it's like to live there.
So we decided to check it out before making a final decision to move to Bali. And so we did. It was supposed to be a two week trip to Chiang Mai. And we were just, you know, there to check it out to see if everything that that YouTuber said was true. And yeah, we were impressed by how affordable it was. There's just great access to nature and we decided to stay.
Then we started looking for a house. And we found one that was only $400. There were two bedrooms, an office space and kitchen, living room, a yard and a garage, there's a space at the back for doing the laundry. So it was a good deal. It's fully furnished, two bathrooms, hot water in each bathroom. And there's also you know, there's AC TV, everything.
But if you prefer to live in a condo, there are condo units here that can cost you as cheap as $11 a night. And you can use the pool for free. Sometimes there are gyms that you can also have access to. And it's just in a quiet neighborhood. So it's really a good deal.
Here’s the breakdown of our monthly expenses (a family of three):
Rent - $400
Groceries - $300
Electric - $60 (during November to February) $90 - $120 (March to June) $70 - $80 (rest of the year)
Internet - $20/ month (200 mbps)
Visa - $57 for 1-month tourist visa extension; $1,300 for 1-year Education visa
Now, I mentioned earlier that there is one small thing about living in Chiang Mai that can be a drawback for some people. So there's this thing called Burning season, which happens as early as middle of February and can last up to the rainy months, which could be May or June, but in the past years 2019 and 20. It was pretty bad. But this year, it's not that bad.
Here are some resources about Chiang Mai’s burning season:
https://www.tielandtothailand.com/chiang-mai-smoky-season/
https://www.legalnomads.com/air-northern-thailand/
If you like a tropical climate, affordable living, you know, you get better, you get the best value for your money and you want to live in a place that's vegan friendly. And with fast internet, then Chiang Mai is a good place to stay. It's family friendly, kid friendly. There are lots of hikes, lots of nature, and I personally love it.
There is no such thing as a perfect place. Anywhere you go, there will be pros and cons. So it’s good to study those things before making a decision to finally relocate in one place.
Thank you so much for watching this video and I hope I was able to share some valuable insights and tips to you in case you plan to live here. I hope you'll consider subscribing and liking this video if it adds value to you. Let me know in the comments. Do you think you're interested in checking out Chiang Mai one day? I look forward to reading your comments and responding to them. Until next time!
